Sunset Family Photos at Kualoa Regional Park

Five siblings playing together in front of dramatic mountains at Kualoa Regional Park

Kualoa Regional Park photos always seemed a little unreal to me, with the beautiful mountaints right next to the ocean, open fields, and the ocean all in one place. Most places like that are just not accessible. Before I moved to Hawaiʻi, I had only seen images online and wondered what it looked like in person. It wasn’t until I actually photographed a session there that I understood just how amazing Kualoa Regional Park feels. This particular session was one of my first in Oʻahu and featured a repeat client and a family I knew when we lived in Alaska together. We had both experienced one wild, beautiful place are are now living in another, and I felt so grateful they chose me again to photograph their family. This time, instead of snowy mountains, they wanted all the vibrant green and dramatic scenery and I knew Kualoa Regional Park would be perfect.

What Makes Kualoa Regional Park Special for Family Photography

Let’s start with the obvious: the mountains. Even though those dramatic peaks are a classic Oʻahu sight, you usually only catch a glimpse from your car on the H3, with nowhere to pull over, or maybe after a long hike. Kualoa Regional Park is different. Here, you can simply park and take in the breathtaking view, with no effort required. Not only do you have those stunning mountains, but you also get the ocean, classic beach scenes, palm trees, Mokoli’i (meaning little lizard, also known as Chinaman’s Hat) in the distance, and plenty of hidden surprises if you wander around (your photographer can help with that 🙂). Kualoa sits on land that holds a lot of meaning in Hawaiian history, known as an ahupua‘a—a traditional land division that stretches from the mountains to the sea.

As a photographer, I love how open the fields are and how many different backdrops you get in one spot. There are a lot of photographers on Oʻahu and we often cross paths, but at Kualoa, there’s enough space for everyone. The fields are also perfect for letting kids run wild without worrying about crowds. The flat open field also makes it a good spot for extended family sessions and people with limited mobility.

Kualoa Regional Park photos are especially great for families because the location is just so convenient. It might be a far drive, but parking is right there and is plentiful, unlike most other locations. Restrooms are also available, which makes life much easier if you have young kids. And unlike some Oʻahu spots, you don’t have to stress about scheduling your session at sunrise or sunset. Thanks to the usual cloud cover and the direction of the sun, Kualoa Regional Park photos look beautiful even in the middle of the afternoon.

Photo Session Recap: A Real Family Experience

For this session, the family knew right away that they wanted the mountains in the background, so Kualoa Regional Park was the easy choice. On the drive over, it actually started raining, but I’ve learned that weather at Kualoa can change in minutes. Just as I hoped, the rain cleared up just as we started, but the thick cloud cover stuck around. However, it gave us the kind of soft, beautiful light that works perfectly for photos, even without the perfect “golden” sunset.

That’s one of the reasons I love Kualoa Regional Park photos: even on days when the sun hides behind the clouds, the scenery is still stunning and the lighting is super flattering. The weather here keeps you guessing, but usually always works out for the best.
Since the family’s kids were a little older, I could give them some direction while still capturing their personalities and the fun they have together. They were also up for anything, so we took a little time to explore another favorite spot of mine along the water. Wandering like that always brings out those natural, relaxed moments I love to photograph.

Tips for Planning Your Family Photo Session at Kualoa Regional Park

Best Time for Kualoa Regional Park Photos:
  • Sunrise: Direct view of the sun rising over the ocean (stunning on clear mornings, but early!).
  • Mid-afternoon: Great if you want to have your session before exploring the area or grabbing a meal with your family.
  • 1–2 hours before sunset (or anytime after mid-afternoon): Soft, flattering light. Kualoa Regional Park is flexible, thanks to cloud cover and the way the sun moves, you can get great photos at almost any time of day.
Want to make you session extra fun?
  • Plan an activity to do together as a family. Flying kites, having a picnic, playing a sport, there’s a lot of possibilities here! Chat about what you’re thinking with your photographer!
What to Bring:
  • Snacks and water for yourself and your kids (keep extras in the car, just bring what you know you’ll need or for a little bribery).
  • Hair ties. I know you might want to wear your hair down, but the wind can pickup on this side of the island.
  • A small bag for valuables like your phone, Apple Watch, or keys (don’t leave anything you care about in the car).
  • Change of clothes if you want to get in the water at the end of your session (highly recommend!).
  • Towels for drying off or cleaning up.
  • Bug spray. Kualoa can get buggy, especially in the grassy areas.
  • An open mind and a relaxed attitude, these photos are about having fun together.
Outfit Ideas:
  • Colors that pop against the backdrop: think natural tones with contrast, blues, oranges, reds, warm neutrals.
  • Try to avoid green so you don’t blend in with the grass and mountains.
  • Bare feet or sandals are perfect for the setting.
Permits:
  • Kualoa Regional Park requires two permits for photography. It’s not a last-minute location, but don’t worry, I’ll handle all the paperwork for your session.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kualoa Regional Park Photo Sessions

Are there restrooms nearby?

Yes, there are restrooms close to the parking area, which are convenient for quick outfit changes or bathroom breaks before and after your session. Just a heads up, they aren’t always the cleanest and sometimes run out of toilet paper, so it’s a good idea to bring your own just in case.

What’s the water like at Kualoa Regional Park? The water at Kualoa Regional Park is usually calm and gentle, making it a great spot for families who want to get their feet wet or even splash around at the end of a session. It’s especially nice compared to the North Shore, which can be much rougher especially in the winter months.

What about that dock at a place known as Secret Beach?

I know a lot of people have seen those beautiful photos of the dock with the mountains in the background and wonder if we can shoot there. That dock is actually on private property, so I do not offer sessions at that spot. If you’re interested in learning more about Secret Beach and other park locations, you can check out Kualoa Regional Park’s Secret Beach info here.

What if it rains or the weather looks bad?

Weather at Kualoa changes quickly! Even if it looks rainy or cloudy on the drive over, it often clears up. Cloudy days actually give us great, soft light for photos. If we need to reschedule because of really bad weather, I’ll work with you to find a new date.

Can we bring our dog to our Kualoa Regional Park photo session?

Yes, leashed dogs are welcome at Kualoa Regional Park. If you want to include your furry family member in your photos, just let me know so I can plan a few dog-friendly shots.

Will my photos look exactly like these? Maybe, maybe not! Conditions at Kualoa Regional Park can change a lot from day to day. The lighting will be different if it’s only slightly clouded or heavily overcast, and the field sometimes has much longer grass depending on when it was last cut. We may use different backdrops based on your family, the vibe that day, and who else is around. The tides also change how the beach looks, so your photos will have their own unique feel. If you have a favorite spot or style in mind, just let me know and I’ll do my best to make it happen.

Directions & Visitor Info

Kualoa Regional Park isn’t exactly close for most people, it’s a bit of a drive from town or Waikiki. But honestly, the drive itself is beautiful and totally worth it. It usually takes about an hour from Waikiki, depending on traffic. Once you arrive, the entrance is on the right and if you look to your left and see this view, you know you’re there. It’s just before the turnoff to Kualoa Ranch. Parking is free and generally easy to find, though weekends can be busier.

The park is open daily from 7:00am to 8:00pm.
